How Do I Handle Seniors With Mental Issues?

When the ravages of aging begin to debilitate a person’s physical being, the situation is even more compounded and cruel when there are mental issues involved.  This isn’t a Baby Boomer issue — it’s a human issue.

There has been a great deal written about Alzheimer’s Disease as well as Dementia, that affects the brain and overall personality for many of the elderly.  However, what happens when a person has battled depression or other psychological disorders all their life, and they’re faced with their body (and life) starting to ‘shut down’?  How does a person who is helping with the caregiving, especially children and relatives, deal with a sad situation that is now more magnified?

Knowing Alzheimer's

Many older adults view Alzheimer’s as a cause for anxiety, especially since this disease, a brain disorder that affects memory, thinking and reasoning skills, is connected to aging.

According to the Alzheimer’s Associations 2009 report, nearly 5.3 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease; most develop symptoms after age 60.  This number is expected to double within 20 years.  In fact, 50% of those currently 85 and older will probably succumb to Alzheimer’s or other related dementia conditions.  Total healthcare costs are three times higher for Americans with Alzheimer’s and other dementia than for other people age 65+, putting a financial burden on both families and programs.

Welcome to trying to navigate just the types of senior care available, as caring for seniors has grown in importance with the aging baby boomers and increased life expectancies.  To help, we offer some easy to understand definitions of the types of care choices available today:

What Kind Of Senior Care Is Best?

It’s often very difficult to decide what type of care is best, whether that would be in-home care like a helper, or home care nursing, or other out-of-home care like adult day care, retirement homes, assisted living, nursing care, alzheimer’s care, etc.,

How much care deends on how independently he or she can do everyday things.  For example, if you or someone you love and care for has dementia, you may need help with daily tasks such as:

  • Shopping
  • Paying Bills
  • House Cleaning
  • Meals
  • Using The Phone
  • Laundry
  • Transportation

Senior Care Mediation

One of the most frustrating and stressful things is to give your all in providing senior care, and then have your choices criticized or opposed by a sibling, parent, or other family member.  Family disagreements are nothing new.  But when you’re all adults, it seems we resort to nitpicking, debating, raising voices — or ceasing to talk to one another altogether. And when that’s not productive, then what?

That’s when you can try something relatively new: Senior Care Mediation.

5 Tips For A Safe Home

Statistics show that over 60% of home accidents result in a major injury and/or hospital stay.  Home accidents are even more serious for the elderly who may be disabled physically, or with any form of dementia.   Here are some basic safety tips:

  1. Assess the home.  Look at your home, or the home of the senior who needs care, as if you were the person living there with dementia.  What objects could injure the person?  Identify possible areas of danger.  Is it easy to get outside or to other dangerous areas like the kitchen, garage or basement?

Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s

Many view Alzheimer’s disease as a chronic condition like cancer, diabetes and hypertension.  This makes early detection and treatment a more critical goal for everyone.

During the past 10 years, there have been several attempts to create new early detection markers.  The focus has been on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as one of the most successful early indicators of potential future affliction with Alzheimer’s.

Stay Social to Ward Off Declines When Aging

Exercise isn’t the only key to living a longer and healthier life.  As people age, they’re likely to experience loss of muscle strength, speed and dexterity.  While these impairments are upsetting on their own, they are also risk-factors for disability, dementia and death.  Now, researchers have found a simple way to help slow the physical decline of aging: engaging in social activities.

Researcher’s at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center have found that, among the elderly, less frequent participation in social activities is associated with a more rapid decline in motor function.  “It’s not just running around the track that is good for you,” said Aron Buchman, MD, associate professor of neurological sciences at Rush University Medical Center.  “Our findings suggest that engaging in social activities may also be protective against loss of motor abilities.”
